So we know a thing or two about the specialised needs of Oil & Gas operators. But to ensure we continued to meet and even anticipate our customer’s developing needs with the latest in technological support, we performed an assessment of where the industry is moving, both in Brazil and in larger global markets. And the data gathered enabled us to identify areas for development.

Our SURF team, led by Rafael Tanaka, Engineering Manager in Brazil, evolved their current designs, applications methodology and factory processes.

The result? Prysmian’s STU.

A product range inspired by our customers

Designed and manufactured in our SURF units located at Cariacica and Vila Velha, Brazil, the prototype was produced and tested during July 2016.

It marks a further addition to our now fully comprehensive portfolio of SURF (Subsea Umbilical, Riser and Flowline) products for applications in offshore exploration activities and the petrochemical industry.

Prysmian’s STU offers the highest performance levels at the deepest depths.

Guaranteeing the best

At Prysmian, we continually and rigorously test our SURF technologies to deliver the best performing products on the market. So we aren’t finished yet.

The next phase of the development will include installation of ancillaries and full-scale testing, as would typically be required by the customer prior to field installation.

This is an important milestone for Prysmian O&G that will allow us to differentiate our products portfolio from the competition whilst better serving both the Brazilian and export markets”.

Building on a history of milestones in umbilicals

Over the years, we’ve innovated significantly in the SURF sector. For example, we achieved the following milestones in terms of water depths achieved:

1994 for the Petrobras Marlim field (MRL-4, approximately 1000 m WD)
2003 for the Petrobras Roncador field (RO-21, approximately 1886 m WD)
2014-2015 for the Sapinhoa field reaching 2500 m WD in the pre-salt application.
